Leader in the ubiquitin field, having made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the ubiquitin- proteasome system, an area of great clinical importance. Research combines elegant genetic experiments with imaginative biochemical and cell biological methods to understand ubiquitin-proteasome system mechanisms and how they are regulated in cells.

For fundamental contributions in identifying the first physiological substrate of the ubiquitin-proteasome system and determination of key features of substrate ubiquitylation and deubiquitylation, and of proteasome assembly; linked ubiquitylation dynamics with endosomal protein sorting; identified the first SUMO proteases; discovered a deubiquitylase used by intracellular Wolbachia bacteria to manipulate host reproduction.
